Events in Morzine and the Portes du Soleil

7th Jan, try the night ski down the Pleney  It’s a great opportunity to try something different and you won’t forget it!

9th of January, one of the world’s biggest Husky Sledge riding competitions comes to Morzine.  La Grand Odyssee sees ‘mushers’ from around the world compete over a 900km course. The race takes the riders to 24 resorts including Morzine.  It’s fascinating and fun to watch.

Red Bull Crashed Ice Riders Cup
Meanwhile, Avoriaz is preparing to welcome the Crashed Ice Riders Cup on 15th and 16th January. It’s a high speed, downhill skating event and part of the Ice Cross Downhill World Championship where riders can earn valuable points for the Championship.  Local Crashed Ice pros are Tristan Dugerdil and Pacome Schmitt who are very excited in bringing their sport to their home town.  It’s adrenaline fueled and fast, definitely worth seeing if you’re in Morzine.

If ‘ice’ is your thing, then you can buy tickets to see the local Ice Hockey team ‘The Penguins’ play at the sports centre in Morzine. There usually is a every week throughout January and the rest of the season.

Music and après
Once you’ve come of the slopes and want to party there are après events in Morzine, Avoriaz and the Portes du Soleil.
On a Thursday the Cookie Cafe at the top of the Mossettes lift have teamed up with Retro Rentals to throw a weekly ‘back into the 80’s’ party.
Also, the Inferno Bar at the top of the Nyon lift  has regular, popular après parties, as well as a ‘happy hour’ at the bottom of the Ardent Telecabine.  Not forgetting the Hotel Tremplin at the bottom of the Pleney ski run has a great vibe with guest DJ’s.
All the restaurants and bars in Morzine offer nibbles and special offers to tempt you in after a hard day on the slopes. If you just want to relax and chill-out, we love the Coup de Coeur, Beanies coffee shop and bar and Chez Rogers. There are many more, you’ll be ‘spoilt for choice’.

Day off from the slopes
You might want to try – every Wednesday morning, learn how to make cheese. L’Alpage is a local cheese shop which runs the cheese making sessions from the basement of the shop on Wednesday’s at 9.30am. Just turn up, taste and be merry.
If you like Art, there’s a Vincent Van Gogh exhibition at the Palais de Sport, displaying some original Van Gogh’s and work from other artists. The Cinema in Morzine has a weekly timetable of films, regularly showing English versions…such as Star Wars – The Force Awakens.

So if you still have the time and energy after the skiing, boarding, jumping and sliding you’ve done in the fresh powder we’re expecting – don’t worry Morzine has it all.  We can’t wait to see you.

Dizzee Rascal in the HOUSE!

New music festival comes to Avoriaz

Only three days to go before the music starts and we officially open the winter season in the Portes du Soleil in the coolest way with ‘Transitions Music Festival.

Transition is the sister festival of ‘Snowbombing’, an already established music festival in Austria. The guys behind this successful event realised that the Avoriaz and the Portes du Soleil is the perfect venue and decided to bring it to our part of the Alps.

The festival runs from the 13th-19th and headlined by Dizzee Rascal. Other star performers include DJ sets from Wilkinson, Dave Pearce and T Williams.

We’ve had some amazing snow already and Avoriaz opened on the 5th and 6th of December.  This means the stage is well and truly set for this fun music event.

So, if you’re staying in any of our chalets we’ll have all information you need.  This is your snow and music fix.

Everything you need to know about Morzine

Morzine was originally a small farming and mining community and the first lift to be installed was the Pleney cable car in 1934 and since then the town has grown into a ski resort but has still retained its traditional wooden chalets with slate roofs.
Is in the Haute Savoie region of France and part of the massive Portes du Soleil ski area that stretches across fourteen resorts through France and Switzerland.  It is just over an hour from Geneva airport, making it one of the easiest resorts to reach from the UK.

Morzine is a very picturesque and it feels like a French town rather than a ski resort and in the last few years it has installed new lifts and sports facilities,  new bars and restaurants have popped up meaning that it can hold it’s own against many of the big name resorts in the Alps.
