Morzine has a great snow record and although the town is at 1000m the skiing area reaches around to 2500m. We are only a stones throw away from Mont Blanc and therefore catch the Mont Blanc weather system which provides us with the same snow as other resorts at 2000m! As the winter North-East winds blow in from Eastern Europe, it picks up water from Lake Geneva and drops this in the form of snow on the first mountain range it meets – the Portes du Soleil! This means pretty good snow records from November to early May. In fact, Avoriaz has the greatest average snowfall of any French resort
Morzine and much of the Portes du Soleil history is based in farming due to the acres of lush green pastures in the summer. This is also the winter skiers’ friend as we only need eight inches of snow for good coverage rather than the two foot of snow needed to cover the rocky terrain of other Alpine resorts.
As with most high altitude destinations, the weather can change quickly, so you should never set off on a hike without spare layers of warm and/or water-proof clothing. However, storms will only normally last just a few hours, giving way to bright cloudless skies again. Although hot during the days, the nights can be a little cooler than on a traditional beach holiday (often a welcome change), so pack a sweater.
- Summer weather in Morzine is often in the high 20’s in July and August
- June and September are normally cooler and perfect walking weather, with clear skies and great views.
- May and October are normally changeable months and consistently good weather cannot be relied upon.
